Name of GeM+ entry: Mission name
Name of REL file key: MissionName

Description and considerations: This refers to the text string by which the mission is known.

Generally the missions are known by the name of the platform and its identification number seperated by a hyphen (eg. Landsat-7). The FGDC prestandard considers that the entry could store any free text string. However, to normalise the most common cases, the user can select from a normalised mission name list or free text. The normalised text is formed by concatenating the Platform short name (PlaformShortName) and its serial number (PlaftormSerialIdentifier) separted by a hyphen, for example SPOT-1.

Description and considerations: The full name of the platform.

The FGDC prestandard considers that this entry can be stored as a text string. To normalise some of the most commonly used the user is given a list of some platforms from which to choose. The user may however write any string they wish.

If normalised support is required for some platform that is not currently considered, request it at suport@miramon.uab.cat.

Name of GeM+ entry: Platform short name (acronym)
Name of REL file key: PlatformShortName

Description and considerations: The acronym or short name of the platform that is also used to identify it. Many platforms are cited more frequently by their acronyms than by their full names, for example, SPOT instead of Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre.

In the case of having selected a normalised name for the satellite, its acronym can also be selected from a normalised list (SPOT will appear in the case of Satellite pour l'observation de la Terre, for example) or if preferred free text can be used. In some cases the platform's descriptive (long) name coincides with the acronym (as is the case for Landsat).

Description and considerations: Specifies the member of the platform series (a series of different satellites, Landsat, for instance) from which the data were acquired. This is usually a number (7 for Landsat-7) or a letter.

Name of REL file key: InstrumentShortName

Description and considerations: Acronym or short name of the instrument that is also used to identify it. Many instruments are known more frequently by their acronym than by their full name, for example, ETM+ instead of Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus.

If the user has selected a normalised name, then the normalised acronym or free text can be chosen. In some cases the descriptive (long) name of the instrument coincides with the acronym (for example SeaWinds).
