THE PRE-STANDARD OF THE COMITÉ EUROPÉEN DE NORMALISATION (CEN)

There are two types of metadata: mandatory and optional. The mandatory metadata are indicated by being introduced by the word shall whilst the optional follow the word may.

For a metadata set to conform to this norm it must include the keys defined as mandatory under the following headings:

The CEN also has metadata that are conditionally mandatory, meaning that they are mandatory in certain circumstances, for instance, there may or may not exist information referring to the section to which they belong.

THE FEDERAL GEOGRAPHIC DATA COMMITTE (FGDC) STANDARD

The standard categorizes elements as being mandatory, mandatory-if-applicable, or optional as follows:

The optionality of a section or compound element always takes precedence over the elements that it contains.

THE UNIVERSAL GEOSPATIAL METADATA MANAGER (GeM+) STANDARD

GeM+ is based on the European standard of the CEN, that is, it includes all the mandatory metadata included in the CEN standard and the conditional mandatory metadata are considered to be equivalent to the Mandatory if Applicable elements of the FGDC and are considered as obligatory by GeM+.

GeM+ also conforms to the FGDC document since it incorporates all the data elements declared as Mandatory and Mandatory if Applicable. Where FGDC defines mandatory elements from a list of options, GeM+ includes these options and adapts them to fit the content of GeM+. The GeM+ Help describes these and always writes them in bold italics. Similarly GeM+ includes and adapts the FGDC optional elements and describes them in the GeM+ Help. However these are only shown in italics in this summary table.
